Great Spirit of the Great Beyond Whose spacious skin by stars is stippled Whose merest breath upon the Pond of Time doth make majestic ripples – Here I am, your humble servant Every night, your Word I preach My devotion ever fervent. Hear me now, as I beseech: Every year of my existence I have wandered, far and wide Gladly I have gone the distance Head and tail held high in pride I have yowled and I have whispered, I have mewed and hissed your Word So that each and every whiskered individual must have heard All this, I have done to serve you All to sanctify your Name To each cat within your purrview To the feral and the tame. I have but one life remaining Having spent the other eight At long last, my vigour draining And my hour growing late Know my single supplication As I leave life number nine: Make of me a constellation That I may forever shine As reward for how I’ve acted Let me rest upon your fur I’ll lay down, my claws retracted And pass on without demur I can go in peace, if knowing this will be my final task Carry sunlight, ever-glowing, in which other cats may bask
