Forgive me for a moment if I’m cynical I doubt that our civilization will reach its pinnacle We would need a miracle to save us from this madness Hot mess Fewer getting richer More and more of us have got less Revolutions start over a lot less Why not this? Sorry, I don’t buy the pep talk, like “We got this!” The Amazon is up in smoke Amazon is up in stocks The US is a joke And democracy is on the rocks Folks with the most refuse to be taxpayers They say they aren’t robbing us but I still have to pay up Rules are for the little guy and not the big players Crime is going down but anxiety is way up Spineless would-be leaders offer only thoughts and prayers See the rise in profits, I can’t blame the doomsayers It’s not looking up for me, I’m looking for a way out I could use a day out
I wanted to fly But I ain’t ever gone so far before Travelling high And now there’s no horizon anymore
I believe in people, not so much in humanity Not that we are evil, but we seem to chase calamity Got a strange capacity to tolerate mendacity Insanity, so many of us worship moral bankruptcy Criticize a clown and crowds will claim you’re into calumny Truth is their new devil and the Devil ain’t their enemy Pissing on the piety that they proclaim they still possess Wishing their society would walk out of the wilderness They refuse to pay their dues, they just want to bill the rest They don’t want to heal the world, they just want a slow regress Claiming both that they are blessed and that they are the most oppressed Point the problem out politely – pissed them off, how they protest There’s a lot of flak I caught expecting much less so Bit a habanero ‘cause I thought it was a fresno Things are heating up, it ain’t getting addressed, though This place is a mess, so Let’s go!
I wanted to fly…
Power is a pickle when people prefer populists Loyalties are fickle and no one believes optimists Trolls manipulate the polls, cheaters seem to top the lists Now the new normal is to nominate a nativist I am not naïvely expecting an altruist But how are we not electing someone who wants us to coexist? Feels like fiction is the only place to see a hopeful twist Half a generation disillusioned, you get the gist Maybe if we pulled together we could alter our fate But how do we pull when choking on the halter that is hate I know I should do my bit, but I’m convinced it’s too late But if you’re champing at the bit, please don’t hesitate Go and be a hero, get your costume and your cool cape You can fight the good fight, your heart is in good shape I am too exhausted to do anything but put on tape My desire to escape
